ST LUKE'S METHODIST HOSPITAL

This 125-year-old hospital is in urgent need of help. Due to a lack of funding, it is unable to provide adequate care for the community and is on the brink of closure

St. Luke’s Methodist Hospital (Puttur Mission) was established in 1901 by the Methodist Mission in the Jaffna Peninsula, Sri Lanka. Today it is a barely functioning hospital. The hospital was known for the care it used to provide the community through inpatient and outpatient care, maternity and dental services.

Due to the protracted civil war and lack of facilities and personnel, the hospital ceased to be functional. Once the war ceased, the Puttur Methodist Mission was determined to keep this hospital open to serve the public. However, due to lack of funding they have been unable to renovate, equip and bring in the needed medical professionals to provide services.

Project Updates

May 2026

With the building contractors selected and the letter of intent signed, work on the restoration of St Luke's Methodist Hospital will begin in mid-May 2026. Phase one of the project includes the construction and equipping of the Outpatients Department (OPD) and the Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU).

Funds raised through the T4C2027 ride will be directed towards completing phase one, with any surplus being carried forward to finance the second stage of the project.

Thank you once again for being part of this journey. Your support is what keeps this project alive and moving forward. We look forward to updating you as the reconstruction progresses.

The Starting Point

Prior to Trek4Ceylon's involvement, St Luke's Hospital was able to offer a mere two hours of consultancy each weekday. The Methodist Mission partly renovated a one-room building, from which a retired medical officer provided this service to the community...

...but there were still several buildings, pictured below, in desperate need of restoration and re-purposing.

Your continuing support will enable us to achieve our vision of redeveloping St Luke's Hospital into a fully functioning medical facility that serves the needs of the community.
